Yes, you may know Ricky Williams as a Heisman Trophy-winning running back at the University of Texas in 1998 and the 5th overall pick in the 1999 NFL draft by Mike Ditka and the New Orleans Saints. He amassed over 10,000 yards and 66 touchdowns in his NFL career, was suspended multiple times after testing positive for marijuana and was given the nickname “Ricky Weirdo” at one point. What you may not know is the true story of Ricky Williams, as we take off the helmet and get the authentic version of this fascinating human.
In this invigorating episode, Ricky talks about seeking the best version of ourselves and always improving. He may have pursued this avenue in a unique way, but it has been an inspirational path as he found his life’s purpose after he retired from football. He still loves the game, but now he loves giving back to people and the game of football even more, whether that be coaching high school football or broadcasting games on the Longhorn Network.
Ricky has traveled the globe since he hung up his cleats, and in the process, he has been able to connect with people from all walks of life and has used his platform to help others. As a player, Ricky struggled with injuries and pain, taking up to 8 Advil a day in college that eventually led to an ulcer at age 19. Ricky also struggled with social anxiety and clinical depression, and in this episode, he explains how he has been able to overcome and combat those issues. Ricky describes what he would do if he were in charge of the NFL’s drug policy and what his teammates had to go through when dealing with constant pain.
